Right now, medical malpractice is like a lottery for the Lawyers because if you file and lose, you have virtually nothing invested. If however, you file a suit and lose and were responsible to pay ALL costs for the defendant I suspect we could thin the heard considerably. Right now, lawyers, for a very small investment (virtually no risk) have a shot a winning the Lotto. I’m pretty sure their odds are better than the Lotto though!

National health spending is expected to reach $2.5 trillion in 2009, accounting for 17.6 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). By 2018, national health care expenditures are expected to reach $4.4 trillion—more than double 2007 spending. (Sitka)
The Republicans and or Obama plan, is just more of the same. Plenty of profit for the greedy pharmaceuticals and the health care companies. We should model a European Plan, is just 10% of their GDP & we’ll save 1 Trillion dollars a year.

The lawyers need to …
The lawyers need to be held accountable also. Perhaps along with national healthcare, we need “national malpractice carriers.” As a OB in COOK Cty, we pay $150,000 a year to deliver babies. My ex partner made 42,000 3 years ago, after the overhead expenses. The rates are killing us, when coupled with the decreased reimbursements. An OB in Montana pays 1/5th of what we do for coverage.

Everyone needs to be held accountable for errors. Reform does not mean elimination of our right to sue . The schools, businesses, individuals, etc all are plagued by frivalous law suits and “ambulance chasers” .
